Welcome to 2018!


2018 promises to be a bright year for the Eisenhower Partnership and the businesses, residents, and property owners on Eisenhower Avenue.  There is momentum in Eisenhower East, with a number of new projects in the works.   New residents have moved in at the ParcMeridian, and new employees at the National Science Foundation; their presence will help support the retail that is so desired in Carlyle and Eisenhower East.  The City of Alexandria will soon start a study of land use and zoning changes to the Eisenhower East Plan to capitalize on new interest in that area.  Our membership is growing, enabling us to offer you more events and programs, and a greater role in advocacy for the future of our emerging neighborhood.  Our committees are geared up to focus on things that matter to you, our members and supporters!

At the Annual Meeting of the Eisenhower Partnership, Board members elected a new Board of Directors for 2018:

Committees Forming for 2018

The Eisenhower Partnership has four standing committees to be active in 2018.  All are welcoming new members.  Please write to Eisenhowerppp@gmail.com to express your interest in serving on one of the following committees:

Membership Committee: Promotes the Eisenhower Partnership, works on increasing the membership, monitors companies coming to the Eisenhower Corridor and provides a welcoming call to the company. Provides updates to the Partnership database. Designates Ambassadors to welcome new businesses and help with business retention. 

Communications Committee: works on promotional materials to highlight the advantages of living or working on the corridor, reviews the Partnership website and makes recommendations/updates. 

Planning Committee:  Focuses on planning issues along the Eisenhower Corridor. Monitors the City's planning issues and plans which might affect the Eisenhower Corridor. Drafts policy positions and comments, to be approved by the Board of Directors.  Provides updates to the Board of Directors. 

Events and Program Committee: works with the membership committee to promote the Eisenhower Partnership. Organizes mixers, annual meetings and informational events.

New Member Residence Inn Hosts December Board Meeting and Holiday Party

The Residence Inn by Marriott Alexandria South at Carlyle, 2345 Mill Road, hosted our last Board meeting of 2017 and the holiday party that followed.  Many thanks to new member Latrice Burton and the staff of the hotel for a lovely evening.

City Approves Cameron Run Park Strategy

Many of the recommendations made by the Eisenhower Partnership in 2017 are reflected in the City Council’s adoption of a new approach to Cameron Run Regional Park.  At the public hearing on December 16, Daniel Beason represented the Eisenhower Partnership and emphasized our three main points:

  1. Year-round use
  2. Improved maintenance
  3. Flexibility to adapt to new needs as population and development increase

Several City Council members referenced Beason’s testimony in making their own remarks.

  • The specific actions City Council took are:
  • Adopting seven priorities for the park area
  • Exploring partnership opportunities with NOVAParks and other organizations
  • Excluding Lake Cook and the parcel east of Lake Cook from the area under discussion
  • Allowing the City to use portions of the site off-season
  • Establishing a shared Capital Improvement Program and financial plan to fund park improvements

If a new lease is not agreed to by September 30, 2018, then the existing lease would expire July 1, 2021 and the property revert to City control.

Lake Cook Stormwater Management Retrofit Project

If you have driven along central Eisenhower Avenue, you have no doubt noticed that Lake Cook is, well, dry and there appears to be construction going on.  This is for the management of stormwater runoff as well as to provide new trail connections and fishing opportunities, landscape with native plants and provide habitat for riparian birds and animals, and educate the public with ecological and stormwater signage.  Construction is anticipated to be complete in the summer of 2018, at which time the lake should look like this:

Stormwater Utility Fee to Take Effect May 2018

The City has adopted a Stormwater Utility Fee to provide a dedicated funding source to address Chesapeake Bay protection mandates.  The fee is directly linked to a property’s impervious surface and calculated using a standard billing unit of $140.  Condominiums and townhouses will pay less, while commercial properties will have a fee calculated based on impervious surface with credits for measures already taken to improve stormwater management practices.  All property owners in the City will receive a bill, included on their real property tax bill.

Wayfinding Signage Being Installed Throughout the City

The City’s wayfinding program has been in development for many years, but finally in the past couple of months, signs have sprouted up all over town indicating 3-4 destinations on each sign.  The signs are consistent in color and design no matter where they are installed.  Here is an example of one of the signs in the Eisenhower Avenue area:
