National Science Foundation is Focus of this Month’s Agenda:Alexandria-Monday, April 24

What effect will the National Science Foundation, slated to move to 2415 Eisenhower Avenue in late summer, have on its new neighborhood?  The National Science Foundation is one of the federal government's primary science research organizations, with an annual budget of $7.3 billion.  NSF funds 20 percent of all federally-sponsored basic research at U.S. colleges and universities.   Agenda:Alexandria has invited Frank Cole, President of the Eisenhower Partnership, Brian Stone, Chief of Staff of the NSF, and Stephanie Landrum of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership to answer that question Monday evening, April 24 at The Hermitage, 5000 Fairbanks Avenue.  The format is a 3-member panel, answering questions prepared by Agenda:Alexandria’s Board, and then from the audience.  The evening begins with dinner at 6:30, followed by the program at 7:15.  Non-members may attend the whole evening, or the program only; there is a registration fee.  More information is available at www.Agendaalexandria.org.

New Developments in the West End

In mid-April , Floor and Décor hosted a community information meeting to discuss upcoming construction/remodeling at the former Security Storage Warehouse in the 4600 block of Eisenhower Avenue.  The store is scheduled to open in the fall.

The West End Transitway along Van Dorn Street is working its way through Federal processes necessary for grant funds.  Next steps in 2017 include awarding a contract for early design work in spring 2017, submitting NEPA documentation to the Federal Transit administration, also in the spring; and receiving formal NEPA approval in the summer of 2017.

EP member Paradigm and MRP Realty have submitted a Concept 1 plan for development of the Vulcan Materials site at 701 S. Van Dorn Street.  The application contemplates a mix of uses including townhouse, multifamily, retail, and a public park on the 17.5-acre industrial site.  The staff review process could take 12-18 months, with the project likely to have its public hearings in 2018.

Playopolis LLC has applied to operate an amusement enterprise at 5412 and 5430 Eisenhower Avenue; the application for “Scramble” will be heard by Planning Commission and City Council in May.  Parents and caregivers will be able to bring children from infant to 8 years old to the indoor playground without reserving a space; a single entrance fee allows unlimited play during the visit.  The venue offers soft play structures, and a reading and cool-down area featuring Usborne educational books. The concept aims to offer indoor activities designed to improve cognitive development and physical fitness.

The next meeting of the Eisenhower West/Landmark Van Dorn Implementation Advisory Group is scheduled for May 22.  Among the agenda items are an update on the Infrastructure Plan’s Status, preliminary findings from the Air Quality Study, and updates on the potential alignment of the proposed Multi-Modal Bridge.

A number of meetings are scheduled as part of the Cameron Run Park planning process: with the Park and Recreation Commission on April 27, and a public hearing with the Commission on May 18, and at City Council in June.  www.alexandriava.gov/CameronRunPark

Eisenhower East Roundup –

Eisenhower East Plan Blocks 11 & 12 (Hoffman properties), located between the Parc Meridian building and the Eisenhower Metro Station, officially 2360 Eisenhower Avenue and 2300 Dock Lane, were the subject of Planning Commission and City Council public hearings for an extension to a previously approved Development Special Use Permit.  The previous approval allowed a mix of residential and retail uses including 1200 dwelling units and 67,000 sf of retail (including a grocery store), in three towers slated to be among the tallest buildings in the region.  Hoffman is currently in negotiations with a potential developer.

There is an application for an amusement enterprise called “Pump It Up” at 2000 Eisenhower Avenue, in the buildings owned by Perseus; this application will also be heard in May.  Pump It Up is a franchised indoor children’s entertainment and birthday party venue.   It also is a significant venue for raising funds to support local schools and charities.

A proposed Eisenhower East Small Area Plan amendment is to be the subject of a Planning Commission Work Session on May 2; at the same time, there will be a discussion of a new study on the fiscal impact of new development, and the study on office conversion.

At the April public hearing meetings, Whole Foods’ application for the expansion of its café within the store was approved.  Panera’s request for seven delivery vehicles will be heard in May.
