AlexRenew CEO Karen Pallansch Honored by Washington Business Journal

Eisenhower Partnership Board Member Karen Pallansch has been recognized by the Washington Business Journal as a “Woman Who Means Business”, one of 25 talented women breaking new ground in the Washington Metropolitan Area.  As CEO of Alexandria Renew, Karen leads one of the most advanced water treatment facilities in the US.  She became an engineer at a time when women rarely entered that profession.  Her commitment to environmental goals is evident when you tour AlexRenew’s new headquarters building, where numerous exhibits help schoolchildren understand the value of clean water, and a two-story green wall graces the lobby.

Rooftop Event a Resounding Success

On September 21, the Eisenhower Partnership welcomed over 20 membership prospects at the beautiful ParcMeridian rooftop, with expansive views of Alexandria, the Eisenhower Valley, and the Beltway.  Paradigm Cos., developer and owner of ParcMeridian, hosted the meeting, providing delicious food and drink.  Attendees mingled in a relaxed atmosphere, delighted there were no presentations on the agenda for this meeting.  Thank you Paradigm, Micheline Castan-Smith, Michelle Frazier, Dashenka Perera, Morgan Babcock, Shannon Hensley, Diana Pringle and Laura

Eisenhower Partnership Submits Comments on Future of Cameron Run Park

After participating throughout 2017 in a City of Alexandria-sponsored park planning process, and numerous meetings with members of the City’s Park and Recreation Commission and NOVAParks, the Eisenhower Partnership sent a letter to City Council detailing its priorities and recommendations.  City Council is expected to take up the question of future uses of the park in October.  Our key points are:

  • The park should have facilities that can be used year-round, including a covered building with meeting and class space
  • Uses should have the ability to generate net revenues to the City
  • The highest and best uses for the park should serve Alexandrians first, before the region
  • The lease term or management contract should be no more than 10 years (perhaps with options for additional time) in order to allow flexibility in adding or changing uses as the population surrounding the park grows and changes
  • Maintenance of the park should be improved so that it is an asset to Eisenhower Avenue that can be used by nearby residents and employees; in particular the small area between Townes at Cameron Parke and Lake Cook should be improved, landscaped, and maintained
  • A fund should be created to gather proffers from developers proposing projects in Eisenhower East and Eisenhower West, with this fund applied to building a year-round facility in the park when sufficient funds have accumulated; we hope that the City of Alexandria and NOVAParks (if they are the chosen lessee) will add to the fund so that the building may be built sooner.
  • The City should start planning in earnest for uses and funding for the park while the current lease with NOVAParks is still in force.

2901 Eisenhower Avenue Construction begins in November

Toll Brothers Inc. plans to start construction in November on 67 townhouses at the Rushmark site (2901 Eisenhower Avenue) just west of Telegraph Road.  The homes will be 4-story high-end townhomes with 2-car garages, rooftop lofts and terraces with outdoor kitchen options and wet bars.  A model home will be available to visit in the spring.  Project closeout should take about two years.

A Constellation of Events is on Tap for You This Fall

The Eisenhower Partnership, its members and related organizations have a multitude of events “on tap” (you’ll see why we use this term shortly) for members and friends.

The Eisenhower Partnership presents its annual “Yappy Hour,” on October 26 beginning at 5 pm, a dog-friendly happy hour at the Holiday Inn Alexandria-Carlyle. Click here to register. The event features a silent auction and raffle with proceeds to benefit the Lost Dog Foundation.  Yappy Hour is part of Dogtoberfest, a series of dog-friendly events sponsored by the Eisenhower Partnership, Old Town North Community Partnership, and others in honor of National Shelter Dog Month while giving back to local organizations that assist local animal shelters and pet adoption organizations.  Related events include:

  • Rescue Ale Release Party at Lost Dog Café on October 5 to support the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, featuring a limited-edition IPA called Lost Dog Rescue Ale created by Port City Brewing Company
  • Pet Adoption Block Party on October 7 at the Lost Dog Café, including raffle
  • Outdoor Festival for Dogs and Cats on October 28 in Montgomery Park, featuring pet-friendly events such as a costume parade, paw reading, K9 games, and a charity raffle.

The meeting will include an overview of projects and studies within the Eisenhower West and Landmark/Van Dorn Corridor planning areas.

On November 8, there will be an Opening Ceremony for the National Science Foundation – stay tuned for further details.  The Eisenhower Partnership created a Welcome page on its website (www.eisenhowerpartnership.org/welcome) to provide information on business and other resources available in our service area to NSF employees (and everyone else of course).

The Eisenhower Partnership is planning its Annual Meeting for November 15 from 5 to 7, to be held at Alexandria Renew’s sixth floor scenic meeting room.

And First Night is just around the corner….in preparation, bands and individual performers are invited to enter the “Battle of the Bands” no later than November 30 (more info at www.firstnightalexandria.org/battle); and First Night itself, sponsored by EP member AlexRenew among others takes place on New Year’s Eve with entertainment that is alcohol-free and family-friendly.
